Dito Migrates 19 Oracle Databases and More Than 50 Core Business Systems to the Cloud for Utah Department of Transportation

The State of Utah needed to move 19 Oracle databases and more than 50 of its core business systems to the cloud. With Dito’s help they were able to migrate to a GCP integrated system with improved failover capabilities and no increase in Oracle cost.

Challenge

  • The State of Utah wanted to move its applications to the cloud as part of a data center exit strategy. This included more than 50 of UDOT’s core business systems that rely on Oracle. Many of these systems were developed more than 10 year ago on outdated Oracle software. The applications & databases were tightly coupled. Most of the
    production systems were supported by 3 database instances.

Solution

  • Using Google’s Bare Metal solution and Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager (OLVM), we were able to assist the agency with no issues. Dito engineers designed and implemented a system which allowed them to migrate 19 Oracle databases and 50 applications to a GCP integrated system with NO increase in their Oracle licensing costs and as the cherry on top, improved failover capabilities.

Results

  • UDOT were able to vacate their on-premises data center with minimal disruption to business operations. 19 Oracle databases & more than 50 associated applications were migrated from a VMware cluster running on legacy hardware to enterprise grade servers equipped with latest Intel Cascade Lake processors. These were configured using OLVM to provide a more robust system integrated with Google Cloud.
